Graduation Guide

Graduation and commencement are related but separate processes. Learn the differences between receiving your degree/diploma and participating in your ceremony.

In addition, review any final tasks before graduating and how to stay connected to other Hawkeye alumni.

RSVP

The University of Iowa uses an opt-in RSVP process for commencement. Students who RSVP “I plan to participate” by the deadline will be recognized at the ceremonies. Learn more about the RSVP process.

Applying for your degree does not RSVP you for ceremony participation.

Academic Regalia

All graduates are expected to wear academic regalia at their ceremonies. Regalia may be purchased or rented through the online regalia portal or at the Iowa Hawk Shop.

Order or rent your regalia in advance; it will not be available on the day of the ceremony.

Find Your Ceremony

Each college holds its own commencement ceremony, typically the weekend after finals. All collegiate commencement ceremonies are held at either Carver-Hawkeye Arena or Hancher Auditorium.

Guest Information and Newsletter

Family and friends are welcome to celebrate with graduates. Learn more about how to keep up with commencement news and attending commencement ceremonies as a guest.

Commencement Program

The University of Iowa Commencement Program lists all degree candidates by college. A name in the program does not confirm degree completion or participation in commencement.

Livestreams and Recordings

All collegiate ceremonies will be livestreamed with captions. Livestream links are available on each ceremony’s page, and past ceremonies can be replayed on the University of Iowa YouTube channel.

Professional Photos

Flash Photography takes a photo of each graduate during the ceremony.
Proofs will be sent to the email and mailing addresses listed on your commencement name card. You can expect to receive these free, with no obligation to purchase, within 14 days after the ceremony.

Student Deadlines and Communications

The UI Commencement Team communicates primarily through email with all degree applicants in the commencement session. Important deadlines are included in these emails and also posted online.
