Proceed to Strauss Hall

Please Note:

  • All items and people are subject to any search deemed necessary by the University of Iowa Police.
  • No outside food or beverages except one unopened water bottle per guest will be allowed in the auditorium.
  • Items that cannot be searched by security personnel are strictly prohibited; wrapped packages, large bags, and backpacks will not be allowed.

Graduating students should report to the Name Card Table outside of Strauss Hall. Tell the staff member your first and last names. Do not lose your name card! You will need to take it with you on stage.

If you arrive with a coat or purse, make arrangements to leave these items with a family member or friend. Strauss Hall will not be locked during the ceremony and you cannot carry anything except your name card in your hand as you enter the auditorium. Cell phones should be silenced or turned off.

You will be seated alphabetically with your respective program. During the processional, your marshal will escort your group to a designated seating area. A program and order of events will be passed down the row. Please take only one of each.

For the Presentation of Graduates, the candidates will be invited to come to the stage to be recognized individually.

  • Your marshal will lead your group to the stage.
  • Take your name card with you; it will be scanned before you enter the stage.
  • Master graduates – also take your hood with you.
  • Walk to the edge of the stage, hand your name card to the faculty member, receive your diploma cover (Bachelor grads), have your hood placed over your head (Master grads), take a photo with your Program Director, and proceed across the stage to shake hands with University of Iowa officials. You will exit the stage on the opposite side you entered, stop for another photo backstage, and return to your original seat as directed by a marshal.

Following the closing remarks and recessional of platform party, graduating students will be escorted out of the auditorium by the marshal.

The ceremony is expected to last approximately 75 minutes.

Graduates are asked to briefly gather on the stairs directly outside of the auditorium for one large group photo after the ceremony and before greeting your family and friends.

Commencement is the culminating event of University study for students who choose to attend. An appropriate and dignified academic atmosphere is absolutely expected so that you, your family, and other guests may enjoy this important gathering.

The following rules of behavior will be enforced at all ceremonies:

  • No alcoholic beverages of any kind.
  • Inappropriate dress and costumes worn under gowns will not be allowed.
  • Cell phones must be turned off or silenced in the graduate seating area.
  • No flowers, purses, gifts, balloons, or bags will be allowed in the student seating area.
  • Marshals and security staff will be looking for intoxicated persons. Inebriated students are not permitted to participate.
  • With everyone’s cooperation, this occasion will become a proud and happy memory of your academic achievement at the University of Iowa.

Tickets are not required and there are no reserved seats. There is no limit on the number of guests each graduate is allowed to invite. However, the balcony will not be open for this ceremony.
